Grace

This poem is about God's grace - a challenging theme to capture in words!

Grace

A woman, weeping,

crumpled on the floor,

trapped in the impenetrable prison of her own, imperfect life –

the bars are not steel,

the walls are not high or

covered with brutal barbed wire,

but her prison is real.

Grace, yet undiscovered.

A man,

wheeling and dealing in the business world,

making his mark in millions

on the world rich list,

the picture of worldly success,

locks up his multiplex of offices,

slopes home, alone,

to an immaculate, soulless, house, where photos of his family

are all he has left

to remind him

he was once much richer.

Grace, yet unacknowledged.

The pensioner,

stopping each evening to pour herself drink after drink,

to numb the pain that pierces

as she caresses the framed photograph.

of her late husband

in her wrinkled hands,

remembering the joys and regrets,

wondering how she’ll go on now he is gone.

Grace, not yet received.

A tiny man, up a tree,

a tax collector, despised for decades,

a liar, a swindler, a cheat,

unable to live with himself much longer,

climbs a tree,

a last resort,

to find out once and for all,

if there really is hope,

if there really is grace,

even for such as he.

As each loses the fight in the battle to stand alone,

as each looks up,

cries heavenwards in desperation,

‘Are You there? Do You even care?’…

Love breaks in.

Grace shatters walls, defences,

battlements, ramparts,

habits and thought patterns,

built up through years of darkness and despair.

Zacchaeus come down!

Young woman rise up!

Foolish man, surrender!

Old woman, take my hand!

Overflowing, abounding, matchless grace,

God’s free gift,

absolute favour,

loving kindness,

takes each one,

however desperate,

however hopeless,

however many mistakes once made,

sets feet on firm foundations afresh,

reminds

that no-one deserves this gift,

not one,

and yet the gift is given,

over and over,

grace heaped upon grace.

Grace that assures that tomorrow is secure,

grace that declares, today is provided for,

grace that whispers, yesterday is forgiven.

Grace that calls us his children,

if we will place our trust in Jesus’ sacrifice.

Grace that gives all we need when things are good

and more when things are tough.

Dare we imagine such complete forgiveness?

Can our earth-bound minds begin to picture such grace,

bringing freedom and hope,

now and on and on, forever?

Can we contemplate one more day,

one more hour,

standing feebly alone,

without such overflowing strength and love?

It is His to give.

It is ours to receive,

in exchange for a straightforward surrender.

Reach out in faith,

Reach out in faith

And take hold of this matchless gift

of God’s amazing grace.

Remembering Grace Again

Remembering Grace Again Grace's 'birthday' comes around so quickly. Although it's now seven years ago, the unfolding narrative of that week still plays through my mind when the anniversary comes around. Each year is different and this year I feel further forward, more healed and whole than before. Rather than being on a roller coaster of emotion as it plays out, it feels more like watching an old cine film - a bit more distanced, with the volume turned down. Still there, still sad to watch but less painful, less debilitating. Professional support in moving forward (EMDR - a recognised and highly successful approach to dealing with trauma) has played a huge part in that and I would recommend it for anyone struggling with difficult, traumatic memories. The journey and ups and downs of this year are too much and too personal to write about in detail here, but I am always happy to talk further with anyone who wants to know more. Facing and dealing with traum...

Today, You Are Two

If you follow my blog, you will know that we lost my sister seventeen months ago, when my nephew was just seven months old.  Today, he turns two and is a whirlwind of fun and love.  He has forced us all to keep going through some really tough times, as, too, has his big sister.  My sister would be so proud of them both.  I wanted to write a poem to celebrate him - and her continued presence in his life. Today, You Are Two Today, you are two.    I have watched you grow,    As babies do,  And marvelled,   At your perfect, quizzical face,  At your soft cheeks,  Dimpling,   As you smile   And run away,    Whenever I stoop To ask you For a hug. Every time, I catch you and you giggle. You place your head, On my shoulder, For the briefest of moments; I breathe you in - A privilege, a delight. In an instant, You are off again, Laughing and whirling; You sho...

Remembering Grace

Remembering Grace Five years ago today, I had reached 25 weeks of pregnancy with our second child – a baby sister for Benjamin, then 19 months old. The pregnancy was progressing well so, when I hadn’t felt much movement for 24 hours, I wasn’t panicked as I phoned the doctor to a “quick” check that all was well, just before Christmas. It wasn’t. The doctor found no heartbeat, and, an hour later, at the hospital, a scan confirmed that our baby had died. Three days later, in the early hours of the 27 th December, Grace Tennant was stillborn, weighing little over 1lb. As she was born post-24 weeks, she has a birth certificate, a ‘real’ place in history – a small but important thing to us, when we had to register her birth at the town hall a few days later. To sum up the ensuing days, weeks and months that followed that week is impossible – sadness, anger, despair, questions, mixed with gratitude for the deep love and support of family and friends, which held us together and got ...
